Happiness & High Self-esteem Choice #11:Recreational Choice

I choose to only see and listen to those things
that uplift and inspire the human mind.

Thought

We should take time to relax each day, so our bodies and minds can rest from the daily, hectic pressures of our busy schedules. All activities we choose to do in our leisure time should be ones that allow the Spirit to stay with us.

Meaningful activities such as listening to beautiful music, taking walks, talking to people we love, reading good books, participating in athletic events, watching uplifting television shows or movies, enjoying a fun hobby, doing genealogy research, or helping with service projects will all reward us with a spiritual high that leaves us feeling refreshed and renewed.

Recreational activities will help us lead more productive lives, provide sweet opportunities to bond with our family and friends, and greatly improve our happiness and self-esteem.

Scripture

Whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely,
of good report, any virtue, any praise
. . . think on these things.

—Philippians 4:8

Quote

Wholesome recreation is part of our religion,
and a change of pace is necessary,
and even its anticipation can lift the spirit.
… Successful families do things together:
family projects, work, vacations,
recreation, and reunions.

—Ezra Taft Benson

Have Fun!

I remember my mother always saying to me as I walked out the door to go to any activity, “Have fun!” While she was confined to her bed a lot throughout her life because of a serious back injury, she knew the importance of encouraging her eight children to have a good time. This was a noble act of kindness for a mother to do. While she couldn’t do fun, recreational activities herself, she pointed us in the right direction from her bedside. I now cherish those words, “Have fun!”

Wholesome Recreational Activities

In the article, The Family: A Proclamation to The World, written by the First Presidency and Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1995, it states:

Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord Jesus Christ. Successful marriages and families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities.

Yes, let’s all have some good, wholesome, clean, old-fashioned fun!
